Infinity War Theory: When Doctor Strange looked into 14 million possible futures, he saw the single version where the won first and spent the rest of the time trying to find a future where it didn't cost so much.
This might be more of a head-cannon than a theory. But I believe he saw the future where they won first, or near first, and the rest of that time was spent trying to find not only other futures where the won, but also a future where they won and it didn't cost so much like Tony Stark's death, Scarlett Widow's death, Thanos coming back and causing a massive battle, Captain America's retirement, etc. Let alone the fact that himself and trillions of others wouldn't be snapped away for 5 years.
I know Strange and The Avengers weren't particularly well acquainted, and in the beginning of the movie there was even a lot of tension between Tony and Dr. Strange, however he knew their importance, and I certainly believed he would want to do anything he could to save them. He would have even seen things like Tony having a daughter by the time of his death, and he certainly wouldn't want him to have to die if it didn't need to be.
However, Strange, seeing that was the only reality he could foresee them winning, engineered everything on Titan after that point to guide them to the future where they win. Going along with the plan he knew would fail, not doing anything to prevent Quill from punching Thanos, letting Tony get stabbed and only then giving up the time stone, etc.
All of this to say, 14 million possible futures is a lot. I really do believe he saw the future where they won extremely early on, and then spent the time searching 14 million other futures to find just one where they not only win, but it doesn't cost so much.
