Growing up, I was one of the younger children in my family, but life made me feel older than my age. The Moment: My elder sister was not mentally well, so the kind of bond most girls have with their big sister was something I never experienced. Instead of sharing secrets, asking for advice, or feeling protected by her, I had to quietly accept that things were different in our home. Because of this, I often had to take on responsibilities early. I would help look after my brothers and manage small household tasks. Many times I helped my mother with things she needed support with, even when I was still very young. How It Felt: At that age, I didn’t fully understand everything, but inside I sometimes felt a quiet sadness. I wished I had an elder sister I could talk to, laugh with, and rely on. Instead, I tried to be strong and responsible, even when my heart just wanted to be carefree like other kids. Impact Now: Even today, I notice that I naturally take responsibility for others. I try to support people, solve problems, and keep things together because that role started so early in my life. One Takeaway: But this experience also taught me empathy and patience. I learned that every family has its own struggles. Now I remind myself that while caring for others is beautiful, it’s also important to care for my own heart. Sometimes life makes you grow up faster than expected, but it also shapes the strength inside you.
