ELI5: how does non-coding RNA function?
I was always taught that DNA and RNA work as code to produce proteins. I was aware of telomeres and stuff like that that essentially function as a buffer for chromosome deterioration, but I just learned that there are other types of ncRNA that perform different functions like regulating gene expression. What exactly is this RNA doing if it’s not making proteins? Is it still being read by ribosomes? By what mechanism is it performing these non-protein functions?
