Re-watching The Great White Hope again
The *Great White Hope* has been on TV a few times in recent months, and I’ve been admiring it – and thinking about it.
First, James Earl Jones is so impressive. Hard to believe he didn’t win the Oscar, but maybe because it was early in his career, people didn’t quite get how amazing he was. The role not only shows such range, but he is so intense that at times he’s almost feral. I wondered … if he’d won the Oscar … and if he hadn’t gained weight … I wondered how different his career might have been.
Second, I was thinking that it might have been the first inter-racial bed scene in a mainstream Hollywood movie. (I love the scene, where they’re giggling together.) Does anyone know if there was any other inter-racial bed scene earlier?
