Anyone with experience long distance hiking with their dog?
Hello long distance hikers who hike with dogs i need some advice . I like to do long distance hikes (over night 5 to 10 days) and i have previously hiked with my mother, but she is getting older and doesn't really want to do it as often as i do. Therefore i have been considering starting solo hiking and thought a dog might be a good companion. I have looked over my lifestyle and i am thinking a working dog might be a good fit for the activity levels i want. More specifically a protection style dog that could provide company and protection on the trail. However, when looking into what kind of dog would suit me i also came across that i should be able to lift and carry my dog if it were to become injured and german shepherds/dobermans are quite heavy. Whilst i might be able to lift this type of dog and walk for a bit it would be unrealistic to think i would be able to get us both to civilization if we are on a remote trail say 12h to nearest road.
Do you think this is a deal breaker? Should i only look at dogs i can carry out? Have you ever been in a situation where you have needed to carry your dog to safety? #hiking #camping #activity source
