"The Cop and the Anthem:" Winter is coming and homeless drifter Soapy wants to go to jail for three months for shelter and food. His partner Horace suggests they seek shelter with The Salvation Army but Soapy refuses. He engineers many situations to be arrested but is always forgiven. When he goes to church, there is a miracle and Soapy decides to seek a job position. Will he succeed?
"The Clarion Call:" when a thief kills a man, the police does not have any leads. Police Sergeant Barney Woods sees a pen that was found at the crime scene and he seeks out a man called Johnny Kernan. He finds Johnny who invites Barney to drink with him and they go to his hotel room. Johnny recalls their youth, when they were friends, but Barney says he must arrest him since he recognized the pen belonged to Johnny.
"The Last Leaf:" the story is set in Greenwich Village during a pneumonia epidemic. It is about an old artist who saves the life of a young artist, dying of pneumonia, by giving her the will to live. She can see an ivy plant through the window gradually losing its leaves and has taken it into her head that she will die when the last leaf falls. Seemingly, it never does, and she survives. We learn that the vine lost all its leaves. What she thought she saw was a leaf, painted on the wall with perfect realism, by the old artist. The old artist dies of pneumonia contracted while being out in the wet and cold, painting the last leaf. The old artist who saves the girl is the great Behrman.
"The Ransom of Red Chief:" two small-time criminals, Bill and Sam, kidnap Johnny, the 10-year-old red-haired son of an important citizen named Ebenezer Dorset and demand a ransom. The moment they arrive at their hideout with the boy, the plan begins to unravel. Calling himself "Red Chief," the boy proceeds to drive his captors to distraction with his unrelenting chatter, malicious pranks and demands that they play wearying games with him. The criminals write a ransom letter to the boy's father, lowering the ransom from two thousand dollars to fifteen hundred at Bill's suggestion. The father, who knows his son well and realizes how intolerable he will be to his captors and how desirous they will soon be to rid themselves of the delinquent child, rejects their demand and offers to take the boy off their hands if they pay him. The men hand over the money and the howling boy – who had been happier away from his stricter father and does not want to be "rescued" from his more-lenient captors – and flee after the father threatens to turn his son loose on them.
"The Gift of the Magi:" a short story about a young husband and wife and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money. As a sentimental story with a moral lesson about gift-giving, it has been popular for adaptation, especially for presentation at Christmas time. The plot and its twist ending are well-known and the ending is generally considered an example of comic irony.
