YSK: Amazon requires you to have 2FA if you want to recover an account.
YSK that if you don't have two factor authentication (2FA) and someone changes your email and password it is almost (and may be) impossible to recover your account.
Why YSK: People stealing your account and accessing your purchase history, bank account, credit cards, addresses, echo universe, prime account, for 9 days and not having a way to fix it is very irritating and angering. I think you should avoid that.
I have been an amazon power user since it was just an online bookstore. I have almost 4000 orders in my history over almost 30 years, I "own" thousands of dollars of digital media on the account, I have an integrated alexa into my home for automation, auto orders, subscriptions, amazon music, prime, movies, tv shows, books, audible. My whole family uses the account and it's pretty damn integrated in our lives.
9 days ago we notice our Amazon account said it didn't exist anymore and we could not login. Just before that in the same hour our associated email was email bombed with 1000s of spam messages. Fortunately we pre-filter amazon emails and saw that someone had changed the password just 15-30mins prior so we called Amazon customer support.
They said they can't do anything because we can't verify it's our account even though its my name, my address, my order history, my same email for the last quarter century, my phone number, etc, etc because they changed the password and enable the 2FA to their info. They said they'd report it to fraud department, put a hold on purchases, and they'd contact us in a 24-48hrs. 2 days go by and nothing. I call again and get the exact same info and promise, and talk to a supervisor who says the same stuff... rinse and repeat for 9 days. I never get an email or call from amazon and I've called 6 times now. I have been told by at least 4 reps that the account is on hold and being investigated and to expect an email in a day or two.
Today I called again, went through the same path, asked for a supervisor and for the first time got someone that spoke english without a difficult to understand indian accent and more importantly responded to questions OFF SCRIPT. He said there had not been a hold on my account (and he can't because they can't verify the account is mine) but they didn't see any purchases or anything in the past 9 days but to keep an eye out. He promised me that the fraud dept would contact me to have me send in ID and stuff to confirm but this has been ridiculously difficult.
If I had the 2FA turned on this never would have happened and/or I could easily fix it.
I'm hoping I can finally get it settled this week but its been sooo frustrating so far. #education source
