The LA City Council has voted to fail an item 165 times out of 124,331 votes. More interesting finds from this data below.
More interesting things I learned digging through this:
No councilmember has ever gone an entire tenure without voting no. Across 46 members and 23 years, Mark Ridley-Thomas came closest: six no votes during the shortest tenure in the record.
Twice, an item received no support at all.
Councilmembers are marked absent 53 times as often as they vote no: 17.60% of roll calls versus 0.33%. But the clerk’s system has no way to record an abstention, so a recusal looks the same as a no-show.
Failed votes peaked in 2011, not today. That year, 29 roll calls fell short of the eight ayes needed to pass, compared with 28 in 2025.
