Poor Rhodey.. His character has been in a constant decline in terms of creative direction post-Endgame.. Secret Invasion didn’t do him any favours & no signs of Armour Wars coming out anytime soon
War Machine has really only had a few brief moments to shine throughout the Infinity Saga, and was mostly a supporting character (even though he’s actually one of the first three heroes to ever be introduced in the MCU). Considering how characters like Sam, Bucky, and Wanda have taken the forefront and flourished, I would have expected him to have the opportunity to grow and really come into his own going into the Multiverse Saga and especially after Tony’s death.
Instead, he went from being a recurring hero, to barely appearing at all. It started with a small cameo in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (Emmy nominated though, woooo).
However, I feel like most of the damage was from being written into a narrative corner by being revealed as a Skrull in Secret Invasion. Now it feels like they aren’t sure what to do with him or how to move forward, particularly when it comes to clarifying the Skrull debacle and when he was actually replaced (with implications from the director that he may have been replaced as far back as Civil War, but they may have backtracked a bit due to fan backlash).
On top of that, Armour Wars, a project he was supposedly going be to be the lead in, has been stuck in development hell and doesn’t seem like it will be made anytime soon. I am also uncertain whether he’ll even be included in Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Everyone kind of went on to do greater things, while Rhodey has been left behind, floating in the void. Sort of a disservice to a technical OG.
