Brubeck v. Desmond

While I generally gravitate towards more free styles of jazz, recently I've taken an interest in Paul Desmond's playing. This was sparked by just being floored by the beautiful airy melodic lines on Brubeck goes to campus and further reinforced by other performances such as the a train version live from 1966 ( https://youtu.be/rCnDpkGdPaU?is=xhbCf4ohfsVSPrdA ) - notice the crowd goes crazy after Desmond's solo.

This exploration has made me wonder if we would even know Dave Brubeck's name if not for Paul Desmond. For one thing, it was Desmond who wrote take 5. But his playing in general seems more appealing and his voice more unique than Brubeck.

Thoughts? I'm mostly curious about how they were perceived at the time - I've gone to see music on the strength of one of the band members other than the leader - is that what was happening with these guys?
