I first saw this as an in-flight movie in 1994 and was charmed by the storyline and context. As an avid observer of behavior, the English class-system is at play – “a comedy of manners.” This is a screen-portrayal of a demographic which might be regarded as quintessentially English, with its own social mores.
Of course, on another level, the ending is a happy one, with everyone finding a love-match.
When the film was aired on television, I almost fell off my chair. The opening dialogue for the in-flight version had been dubbed to remove the F*** bomb which is allowed on British television. This comedy is a gem; it must be because it makes me smile whenever I watch it (four or five times?). Highly recommended! 👍💯
