How The Force Awakens helped me.
With it being more than 10 years since the film released, I wanted to share a personal story related to this film.
My mother got me into Star Wars. Prior to doing so, we didn't really have anything we both liked. But we bonded over Star Wars. One of my fondest memories was her taking me out of school early the day Revenge of the Sith came out just so we could go and see it. When Disney bought Star Wars and announced more movies were coming, we were both excited but cautiously optimistic.
In June of 2015, just 6 months before the movie released, my mother suddenly and tragically passed away. This took a massive toll on me, and at one point I didn't even feel like going to see the movie.
Fast forward to opening day, I decided to go and see it, if for no other reason that I felt like my mother would want me to. I will never forget the joy I felt watching this movie for the first time. I found myself relating to Rey being alone and Finn wanting something to fight for.
While the discourse around this movies' sequels is divisive at best, I will always have a soft spot for The Force Awakens for bringing me a moment of joy in a dark time of my life.
