Today I want to share a legal maxim that really made me think. Ignorantia legis non excusat Which means… ignorance of the law is not an excuse. In simple words, it means you can’t say “I didn’t know the law” to escape responsibility. No matter who you are, you are expected to follow the law. Even if you are unaware of a rule, you are still accountable for your actions. That’s what keeps society fair and balanced. What I really like about this maxim is that it teaches responsibility. It makes it clear that we can’t take things lightly. If ignorance was accepted as an excuse, people would break rules and easily get away with it. This principle pushes us to stay aware, think before we act, and respect the system. For me, this is not just a legal rule… it’s a life lesson. It reminds us to be careful with our choices and actions. Following the law protects not only us, but everyone around us. And that’s why I chose this maxim.
