Have you ever noticed how one little word can completely change your emotional state?
BUT.
I am grateful for my life, BUT things could be better.
I love my family, BUT they frustrate me.
I forgive that person, BUT I cannot forget what they did.
I am happy, BUT I have so much to worry about.
See what happened?
We started with gratitude, compassion, empathy, or forgiveness, and immediately allowed our mind to create a story that shifted our energy.
I believe many of us have become so accustomed to living in survival mode that our minds treat everyday disappointments, disagreements, and uncertainties as if they were matters of life or death.
And that little word BUT becomes the doorway back into that reactive, catabolic state of mind. Think about how often we do this without even realizing it.
We experience something wonderful, BUT our mind reminds us what is missing. We appreciate someone, BUT immediately remember their imperfections. We begin forgiving, BUT return to the pain.
I have learned that what we consciously give our attention to influences the energy we experience. When we genuinely practice gratitude, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness, we create less room for anger, fear, resentment, and thoughts of lacking to dominate our awareness.
That does not mean those emotions cannot exist alongside appreciation. It means we can choose which ones we continue feeding.
Today, become aware of your BUT.
When your mind starts creating another survival story, question whether you are facing an actual threat or simply reacting to an uncomfortable situation.
Not every disappointment is a disaster. Not every disagreement is a threat. Not every uncertainty requires fear.
Sometimes changing your life begins with recognizing one little word before it changes your entire state of mind.
