My Personal Experience with Extreme Heat in Karachi 🌡️

1. My Experience

I live in Karachi, Pakistan, where summer heat can become extremely dangerous. I have faced heatwaves many times, but one incident is unforgettable for me.

Once, during a very severe heatwave in Karachi, one of my relatives passed away. My uncle accompanied us to the funeral, and sadly, just two days later, he also passed away during that heatwave. This incident deeply affected our family. After that, we started taking heatwave safety much more seriously.

2. Another Lesson I Learned

In June this year, our family planned a picnic during the school holidays. The children wanted to go, so our whole family went together. Unfortunately, I made a mistake: I did not bring a hat or any proper covering for my head. Because of my health, I could not even go into the water to cool down.

After returning home, I became very unwell and started experiencing severe dizziness. My blood pressure rose dangerously high, and I needed medical treatment. It took several days before I felt better.

Even around fifteen days ago, I experienced problems because of the heat in Karachi. These experiences taught me that we should never underestimate extreme heat.

3. Three Important Heatwave Safety Tips

1. Drink water regularly: Drink water frequently throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Carry a water bottle when going outside. During heavy sweating, an appropriate oral rehydration solution (ORS) may also help.

2. Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities: Stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day. If you must go outside, wear a hat or cover your head, use light and breathable clothing, and stay in the shade.

3. Keep your body cool: Stay in a cool, well-ventilated place, take a cool shower when possible, and rest regularly. Avoid waiting until you feel dizzy or weak before taking precautions.

4. What Do People Often Overlook?

I think people often overlook how quickly extreme heat can affect their health. They may think they are strong enough to tolerate it, or they may ignore early warning signs such as dizziness, headache, weakness, and nausea.

We should never ignore these symptoms. If someone becomes seriously unwell, confused, or collapses in the heat, seek emergency medical help immediately.

5. My Personal Message

My message to everyone is simple: please do not take heatwaves lightly. Family outings and picnics can wait, but our health and lives are more important. Check the weather before making outdoor plans, carry water, cover your head, and stay in the shade.

I also learned that sugary soft drinks are not the best choice for hydration. Water is usually the best option, and ORS can be useful when appropriate.

Let us learn from our experiences and protect ourselves and our loved ones. Being prepared is always better than being sorry! 💜

Stay safe, stay cool, and take care of one another. 🤲
