mYSK the difference between Hispanic, Mestizo, Spanish and Latino. YS also K that Hispanics and Latino can be of any race.

Many people seem to think only of Dora the Explorer or brown people with sombreros when they think of a Hispanic or Latino person. If you're one of these people, please read this.

• A Hispanic person is someone from a Spanish-speaking country, so all of Latin America https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_America inus Brazil (some people include Haiti too), plus Spain and Equatorial Guinea.

• A Latino/a person (do not use the term Latinx, most people believe it implies Spanish is a sexist language) is someone from Latin America. So remove Spain (which is in Europe) and Equatorial Guinea (in Africa) and add Brazil and maybe Haiti.

• The word "Spanish" refers to people and things from Spain, NEVER to a person from Latin America. Mexicans are NOT Spanish. Puerto Ricans are NOT Spanish.

Now here's the thing: "Latino" and "Hispanic" ARE NOT RACES, they just refer to the person's place of origin and native language. They can be white, black, whatever.

•This guy is Hispanic and Latino, and of Japanese descent. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Fujimori
•This other guy is Hispanic and Latino, and of Italian descent https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Messi. The vast majority of people from Uruguay, Argentina and Southern Brazil are white due to European immigration between 1870 and 1950.

•This guy is Hispanic, but not Latino since he's from Africa. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Mac%C3%ADas_Nguema

These people are all of different ethnic origins, but they are still 100% Hispanic (since they speak Spanish) and the first two are Latino since they are from Latin American countries.

Now, why do so many people associate the words Hispanic/Latino with brown people? Well, when the White Europeans arrived in the Americas they had children with the Native Americans, to try and strip them of their culture and to increase the population. The people with Native American and White ancestry are known as **MESTIZO**. So mestizo is a race, like "black" or "white". Hispanic is nothing more than a linguistic term, while Latino is a geographic term. And therefore Hispanics and Latinos are just as diverse as Anglo-Americans, we aren't all maraca-wielding brown people with moustaches.

Why YSK: So you aren't surprised when you go to Buenos Aires and see more white people than in New England.
