YSK: In the US, you can freeze your child's credit before they even have a credit history.
Most people associate credit freezes with adults who've had their information stolen. But children can be victims of identity theft too.
Someone could use a child's Social Security number to open fraudulent accounts, and the problem might go unnoticed for years because children generally aren't checking credit reports.
Why YSK:
In the US, parents and legal guardians can request a free credit freeze for children under 16 through Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
If a credit bureau doesn't already have a file for the child, it can create a restricted record specifically to freeze it.
The freeze makes it harder for someone to open new credit accounts using the child's identity. It stays in place until it's removed.
You need to contact all three credit bureaus separately, and you'll generally need documents proving your identity and authority to act for the child.
It's a preventive measure, not something you have to wait until fraud happens to use. #education
