I am complete beginner, planning on making a "wrought iron" fence. What should I know?
I want a wrought iron fence but the price is putting me off. I am bit of a DIYer and have long thought I should learn to weld so this could be the time to try.
I need input from some experienced people though:
I don't intend on making anything super complex with forged spikes and stuff; mostly using straight square and flat bars to weld together something vaguely fence-like.
* What steel would you recommend? This is mostly a question of price, availability, and how easy to weld it is.
* Is there some specific steel I should avoid at all cost?
* Completely new to welding, what type of welder is good to start with? I intend on practicing before starting the main project.
* If I do want to work the steel a bit, i.e. heat it up to bend and such, what sort of torch (like in regard to temperature) would I need? Is stuff like quenching relevent in this application?
* How should seal the fence? The plan is to paint it black, any specific kind of coating that is recommended?
