My son asked for a "Waterfall Flower Gem Cake that tastes like Root Beer with a Little Boy sliding down"
I've only attempted elaborate cake decorating once before when I made him a tree stump cake. This one I originally intended to pipe the flowers, but time-crunched myself and ended up looking up which of the flowers in my yard were food-safe and using those instead (marigold, snapdragon, aster.) The cake base is a vanilla butter cake that I added homemade reduced rootbeer syrup and LorAnn's root beer concentrate to. The frosting is swiss meringue buttercream, also with Lorann's added but then I ran out and used a little black cherry, hoping that it would kind of approximate Dr Pepper if not Root Beer. I thought the resulting combo was tasty, but it needed some acid, so last minute we made some lemon curd and dyed it blue and used that for the waterfall and pool on top. Also doing the heavy lifting in decor: chocolate rocks and pebbles, crystal rock candy "caves," edible glitter, gummy seashells, and cotton candy. And lego kids, obviously not edible haha If I had a redo I'd want to see if I could bump up the root beer flavor because that didn't really translate and I'd want to work on my frosting and piping skills. Overall, my four year old was happy and my friends and family were impressed, so I'll take the win and let my internal critic take a back seat. #drink #food source
