It's cold as hell in the north currently, so I bought and used some muriatic acid instead of slushy vinegar to remove scale. It seems like I pulled off a good amount of stuff, but the steel is still pretty rough. When it's warmer, I use vinegar for a day or so, then wire brush it with a drill. That leaves a smoother surface, but I don't know if that's due to the brushing vs. insufficient pickling.
Bonus question: I have some naval jelly (phosphoric acid), would that be good to remove any lingering flash rust and give the surface a good finish for paint to stick to? I tried on a small portion, but the dark phosphate coating wiped off a bit. Not sure if that's expected, and you just jelly, rinse, wipe, and call it good? #industry
