Why are my box bay windows so cold? Suggestions for improvement?
I have 2 bedrooms with box bay windows (https://imgur.com/a/cold-window-box-IfJvHig), and both of those rooms are probably 5 degrees colder than the rest of the house. Both window boxes have this hip height shelf (about 2' deep, 8' across) that you can either use for sitting or display.
I took an IR thermometer and measured the temperature of the shelf and it's reading 40-50F. Exterior facing walls read 60-62, and internal walls read 66-68. (We keep our house at 68). Exterior temperature was in the 20s that day.
Is there any way to increase the insulation to keep that window box from being such a heatsink? My initial thought was to pry off that window shelf and add more batts, but I'm worried the fix might be more involved than that. Any suggestions welcome- thanks! #diy source
