I’m looking to build a mobile chicken tractor (or four) for our flocks. I found some plans I like, one of the cattle-panel hoop types that use a timber frame. Because the timber will be resting on the ground, I’m trying to figure out the best way to seal it or wrap it to protect it from rain, mud, and insects.
Because I will have screws, I read that barrier treatments such as polyurethane aren’t going to work. Is that right? Google searching yields a lot of information, most of it contradictory and some doesn’t apply- I’m not sinking posts into the ground, for example. I’m also looking at maybe wrapping the wood in roof paper, but again there would be fail points where I’m screwing the timber together.
