I forgot how good Homecoming is

There are almost no spoilers for Brand New Day in this post! I think there’s like one that I put spoiler tags on. Just so y’all are aware.

Okay, it has been a LONG time since I watched any of the MCU Spider-Man movies. But then Brand New Day came out, and I loved it so much I decided to watch it again. I also figured I should rewatch the other Tom Holland movies so I can fully appreciate it. And, ngl, also so I can write a fanfic about it.

Well, anyways, I watched Homecoming this afternoon. And wow. I genuinely forgot how good this movie was. For years, people absolutely. hated it and just MCU Spider-Man in general. There were so many complaints. It’s not comic accurate enough, Peter should be broke and struggling, why didn’t they show Peter’s origin story, why does Peter rely on Stark so much, etc etc. People just couldn’t appreciate that the MCU was trying to do a new thing. We already got five more comic accurate movies before Homecoming. What’s wrong with switching things up a bit? Honestly, I love the changes they made. And I especially enjoy seeing Peter’s mentor-mentee relationship with Tony Stark. Honestly, I got a bit pissed that he was >!never mentioned in Brand New Day. Peter has this sad montage about all the people he lost, and Tony isn’t in it at all. Um, hello? Are we just forgetting how close they were? Ugh.!< I know I’m probably in the minority for that one, though.

But after No Way Home, there was a massive switch up on MCU Spider-Man, and now everybody loves him. Homecoming has gotten a much more positive reception, and its status as hated has kind of moved on to Far From Home. Which is stupid since Far From Home is still pretty good, but I digress. It’s great that Homecoming is finally getting some appreciation. Because it’s a damn good movie.

The highlight for me absolutely has to be Vulture. Something about the silhouette with those massive wings and glowing green eyes is absolutely intimidating. And even knowing the twist, the moment where Peter opens the door still made my heart stop. The following sequence has to be one of the best scenes in the MCU ever. The traffic lights on Vulture’s face when he finally realizes…holy shit. And the way he threatens Peter so casually. I genuinely think the Vulture is the best villain MCU Spidey has ever faced.

And, despite all the changes, another thing I love is that the MCU fundamentally understands the character of Spider-Man. When Peter saves Toomes during the final battle, that IS Spider-Man. Spider-Man always helps people, even if they’re villains. He never wanted Toomes to die, despite Toomes trying to kill him multiple times. Spider-Man is the hero of mercy, and Homecoming illustrates this perfectly. Which makes it hit so much harder when Peter tries to kill Norman Osborn in No Way Home.

Another one of my favorite parts of Homecoming is seeing the dynamic between Peter and Tony. Which started as a mentor-mentee one, but feels to become almost father-son like by the end. And yeah, I know that might be unpopular. A lot of people wanted Spidey to be on his own and not in Tony’s shadow. But it just works for me. Homecoming would not be nearly as good without it. And I REALLY wish we had seen more of this dynamic, but obviously Peter getting snapped and Tony dying got in the way of that. At least Tony’s legacy is a big focus in Far From Home. And I guess that’s what fanfics are for (there’s certainly a lot out there, lol).

I’m sure all of this has been discussed to death at this point. I mean, Homecoming is 9 years old. Which is absolutely insane to me. All the actors were SO young! We practically saw them grow up in real time. MCU Spider-Man has been going on for so many years, and I hope it goes on for at least ten more. Give us two more trilogies, damn it. Until Tom Holland is 90. Because I don’t think there’s been a single miss with MCU Spider-Man. From Homecoming to Brand New Day, I love it all.
