I had the honour, this very evening, of accompanying a gentleman of the welding profession to a modest repast. He discoursed at considerable length upon his mastery of the forge and the anvil, declaring himself to be possessed of a dexterity and precision in his craft. A doubt hath crept my bosom.
This was the second occasion upon which I had the honour of accompanying the gentleman in question, and I must confess the hours passed in a manner not wholly disagreeable.
Yet, I find myself compelled to observe that the discourse turned with considerable frequency upon matters of trade and profession, and I, a young woman of but one-and-twenty summers, was oftentimes at a loss to comprehend the half of what he, a gentleman of three-and-twenty, did impart. I am, however, by nature possessed of a most inquisitive disposition, and I endeavour with all diligence to augment my understanding of such worldly affairs.
He did relate that he had removed from a small and rural hamlet to this great metropolis, whence I myself do hail, and that during his years at the public school, his studies were chiefly directed toward the mechanical arts and the various avenues of employment in the trades.
It was, he avowed, this very circumstance that had guided his choice of vocation. He further remarked that his employers and fellow labourers in this vast city are frequently struck with astonishment at the proficiency he hath attained, for his skill far exceedeth their expectations.
