The Wa people, one of the 56 ethnic groups in China, is now celebrating their traditional "Monihei" festival. In English, the festival's name means "Smear You Black" and they do this by covering each other with muddy water. It is a gesture of future health and happiness.
Besides for this festival, the Wa people customs such as dancing with bamboo poles, making rice cakes and playing wooden drums. In a Wa ethnic village called Simola in southwest China's Yunnan Province, 26-year-old Li Lianhuan celebrated with her family in their traditional way for this year's Spring Festival.
The Li's small courtyard is now bustling with business every day, a transformation since 2017, when the family had just exited poverty.
Li's father had a car accident in 2010, which led to injuries to his neck and spine. Ever since, her mother had to work in other cities to raise money to support the family. During the hardest times, they struggled to even afford their kids' assignment notebooks.
In 2014, the Li family was registered as being in poverty. With the support of the country and thanks to the perseverance and hard work of the whole family, they've made it through the hard times. In fact, Li has just finished her postgraduate studies and is preparing for the civil service exam.
Simola means "the land of happiness" in Wa language. During this year's Spring Festival, the Li family enjoyed singing traditional Wa songs with hard-won happiness. #ethnicminorities #culture #people #festival
