I’ve been on a heater these past two weeks. All found locally in Virginia. Let’s talk favorites:
Finally got my copy of Karma; stereo pressing from 1969, was everything I was hoping for and more.
Moving down the ladder from there, I’ve been getting into the avant-garde and the Ornette and Gato are both challenging, but affirming — it’s starting to make sense. The Jack DeJohnette I had higher hopes for but it feels super loose even by free jazz standards.
The O’Donel Levy and McLaughlin are both amazing, two of my favorites. $10 records with big guitar sound. Along with the avant-garde, I’m loving the fusion, funk, soul bridge that starts appearing in the early-to-mid 70s. Same with the Idris Mohammad, might be more disco, but still fantastic.
And finally the Herbie, not my favorite. Right on the cusp of Empyrean Isles and Maiden Voyage so a bit subdued, but very cool accompaniment by Grant Greene on guitar. Same with the Clifford Brown and Max Roach, great copy but nothing I feel like I haven’t heard before.
