I recently camped at a National Forest campground in Colorado. We booked two sites six months ago, planning to have friends come, but they couldn’t join. We introduced ourselves to the camp host and shook hands with him, explaining to him about the two sites, and that our friends couldn’t join due to worry of wildfire smoke. We spoke to him about how most of the campground was empty due to people not coming.
Everything was great until we go to pack up to leave and couldn’t find our camp mat (outside rug) that we’ve had for 15 years. That’s when I noticed the firewood from our site that someone else left had been taken (it was used to hold the rug down.) We weren’t going to use the wood, but I found it strange that someone grabbed it while we were occupying the site. I immediately thought it was the camp host, since he was selling wood for $10 a bundle, this was at least 2 bundles, and he probably wanted to resell it instead of us have it. Fine. I don’t care about the wood, but the rug was gone?! It’s not worth much, but I actually do care about it. I decided to walk over to the camp host site to ask him about it.
He was not there, but I was shocked to glance at his tent and easily see through the screen, my rug folded inside. My heart was beating out of my chest, and I was coursing with adrenaline, but I made the choice to open the tent and grab it, touching nothing else. We then left the campground as planned, him nowhere to be seen.
I am completely boggled by this! On one hand, I feel bad for trespassing the camp host’s tent to get my rug. On the other hand, I am completely let down by the person we should have trusted most while camping, was not going to wait around for him to return and to confront him, and it was my property.
I’ve always felt campgrounds were very safe in Colorado, with people being overly generous if anything. My whole view of the camping world and hosts in general is skewed. AITA? What would you have done? There is no way it blew away and he found it. It was securely under wood and had already stayed stable in crazy wind. There is no doubt it’s my rug. It has acrylic paint from my kids on it, as well as burn marks from us. It truly is the principle. I don’t want to be worried about petty stuff being stolen from my campsite, ever. Wtf?! #camping #activity source
