At the height of their fame in 1945, Abbott & Costello's…

At the height of their fame in 1945, Abbott & Costello's backstage feud became so toxic they refused to speak, instead hiring rival press agents to publicly attack each other in the papers.

Most people assume Abbott and Costello were best friends off-camera, but the reality was completely cutthroat. By 1945, the tension snapped. Lou Costello went to the press and publicly accused Bud Abbott of being a drunk who was jeopardizing their career by signing terrible contracts while intoxicated. Abbott retaliated by threatening to publicly beat Costello.

The feud got so outrageous they actually hired rival press agents just to leak hit pieces about each other. They didn't bury the hatchet until 1947, when they finally bonded over the tragic 1943 drowning of Costello's one-year-old son, pouring their money and time into a youth foundation in his honor.
