Being the Ultimate Partner: Something Everyone Can Learn from Richard Livornese
I’ve been watching some of Richard Livornese’s latest matches with Jack Munro, and it’s hard not to notice what an incredible partner he is.
Something I’ve noticed in pickleball is that so many players become negative or withdrawn when their partner misses a ball. That only makes their partner feel more pressure in an already intense tournament environment.
What Richard does so well is reassure his partner after a mistake, saying things like, “That’s okay, I love it,” or, “Keep going for it—I love it.” Conversely, when Richard makes a mistake, instead of saying, “I suck,” he says, “Pick me up, partner,” or, “Get me this next one, partner.”
That kind of communication helps relieve tension and pressure, allowing both players to stay as loose as possible—which is when we all play our best.
I wanted to highlight this observation and see what others think. Do you prefer a partner who says nothing and occasionally paddle-taps, or do you think this more direct, positive style of communication is better? #sport
