In 1989, the return of 70-year-old Gaston Boissac, a French soldier listed as missing and whose name appears on the war memorial in Soulières, deeply affected his remaining family and the inhabitants of his small native village. In reality, he had been a prisoner of war, liberated by Soviet troops in 1945 and taken to the USSR, where the Cold War had stranded him. Apparently, none of the letters he had sent to his family, his fiancée, and the mayor, desperate for help, had ever reached their recipients.
