Why do you think Christmas traditions, ex Ukrainian Christmas Eve foods, are more prominent in Ukraine than other former USSR or Eastern bloc countries?
Hi,
I have a friend who moved to my country from Russia when she was young, and another friend who similarly grew up in my country, but lived as a young boy in Serbia. My friend from Serbia moved back there to work, and he studied in Germany. Both my friends said New year's is still the main holiday season celebration after the suppression of Christmas celebrations in the former USSR and the communist government in former Yugoslavia.
My boyfriend's family is of Ukrainian-polish ancestry, and I have learned through them about the Ukrainian Catholic christmas eve dishes of the kutia, fried fish, mushroom sauce, perogies/varenyki, holubsti, nalesnyky, and more.
Does anyone think there was more resistance to the atheism of the USSR and communism in the part of the USSR that is Ukraine compared to Russia or some of the other former Eastern bloc countries? Are there other former Soviet or communist countries that still have traditional Christmas customs that you know of?
