I just watched Rental Family, and I quite enjoyed it. It's a little bit sappy and the plot was a bit trite, but it still managed to tug on my heartstrings and I enjoyed Fraser's performance.
It got me thinking about the setting. I haven't seen very many movies set in this kind of version of Japan. We've all seen the historical epics (*The Last Samurai, Letters From Iwo Jima*) or darker films that showcase Japan's nightlife or the underbelly of the culture (*Lost in Translation, Tokyo Drift*). But what are some movies about normal people living in modern Japan?
Lighthearted comedies or dramas with low stakes? Movies that feature the culture and locations as much of a part of the film as the plot? I know of tons of anime that do this, for instance, most of Makoto Shinkai's filmography. But I'm not really aware of live action films that do. #movies #video source
