TV mount- wall studs appear 3.5 inches wide

this is not my first time mounting a TV, but it is the first time I have encountered studs that appear to be about 3 1/2 inches wide (using Zircon stud finder)

this is an interior wall in my apartment with one room on either side: bedroom and closet

\- 3 1/2 inch reading on both sides of the wall, same area

\- wall is about 5 inches thick

\- knocking on the stud sounds hollow-ish, though less than on plain drywall

This leads me to think that for some reason there are two separate, sideways studs with a gap between them. (1/2 inch drywall + 1.5 inch stud + gap + 1.5 inch stud + 1/2 inch drywall)

I don’t know why this would be the case. it seems like most studs in the apartment are this wide. At first I thought it was about 3 inch which made me think of two married 2x4s, but that seems wrong

looking for:

1. How can I test this to be sure what I’m working with?

2. Is this heard of? Why would the walls have been built like this?

3. If this is the case, what’s the solution for mounting a TV? I think probably shorter bolts should do fine?

cheers
