How to remove trace iron from copper turnings without damaging copper?
I’m working with a batch of copper turnings (lathe scrap) that visually appear to be \~90%+ copper, but may contain small amounts of iron (mild steel) and possibly nickel.
I tried treating the material with hydrochloric acid, but I observed little to no reaction, which suggests minimal free iron content or possible surface contamination (oil/oxide layer).
My goal is to selectively remove any trace iron without dissolving copper or losing material value.
What would be the most effective and practical method for this?
Some specific questions:
* Is acid treatment (HCl or other acids) effective for trace iron in this type of scrap? * Would mechanical methods like magnetic separation still work at this stage? * Are there better chemical or electrochemical methods to remove very small iron contamination? * Any recommended pre-treatment steps (degreasing, oxidation removal, etc.)?
Looking for practical, small-scale industrial solutions.
