The issue with Quantumania is it got WAY too big for it's boots

I honestly think the biggest issue with Quantumania is not just the CGI, or MODOK, or even Kang. It is that the film feels weirdly embarrassed by what made the Ant-Man movies work in the first place.

The appeal of the first two films was never that Scott Lang was some central pillar of the MCU but that they were smaller, lighter, and more playful than most Marvel films. They had heist energy, family comedy, and a lead who felt like an ordinary guy constantly in over his head and THAT was the identity of the series.

But then here comes Quantumania which throws pretty much ALL of that away because it feels so determined to prove that Ant-Man can be important on the same scale as the bigger MCU event films. Peyton Reed more or less said this himself before release when he said he did not want Ant-Man to be the “palate cleanser anymore” and wanted this one to be “the big Avengers movie.” That mindset explains a lot.

Instead of building on what made these films distinct, the movie scales everything up until it loses most of its personality. The Quantum Realm setting removes the grounded world that helped the earlier films bounce off Scott’s everyman energy. A lot of the supporting cast texture is reduced (where the hell is Luis. The humour feels weaker because it is no longer playing against normal life. Even the action is bigger without really feeling more inventive.

The film is so focused on launching Phase 5 and turning Kang into the next huge MCU threat that it stops feeling like an Ant-Man movie and starts feeling like an obligation. That is why the problems feel conceptual rather than just technical. The execution is messy, sure, but I think the bigger issue is that the core creative instinct was wrong from the start.

There was never anything wrong with Ant-Man being the smaller-scale corner of the MCU. That was the point. Not every hero needs to carry the fate of the multiverse. Quantumania seems to think making Ant-Man bigger automatically makes him more valuable, but it mostly just makes the film feel less like itself.
