One emotional mark from my childhood was that my father lived in France while I was growing up.
When I was young, he was far away most of the time.
I remember watching other kids with their fathers at school events or family gatherings.
Phone calls and occasional visits were special, but they were not the same as daily presence.
Sometimes I felt proud that he was working abroad, but other times I just missed him quietly.
Today, it shows up as a fear of distance in relationships.
When someone important to me is far away, I feel anxious.
I sometimes worry that distance means emotional disconnection.
I also value physical presence more than words.. as a child, I wanted simple moments like eating together or talking before sleep.
I didn’t always say it, but I felt the gap.
There were questions and feelings I kept to myself because he wasn’t there in person.
One way I’ve grown past it is by understanding the sacrifice behind his absence.
I now see that he was trying to build a better future for us.
That distance shaped me, but it also made me stronger and more aware of what truly matters connection.

It’s a quiet kind of heartbreak when you have to learn at such a young age that love can exist across an ocean, even if your heart just wanted it in the same room.
I think many of us who grew up with a "distance" between us and a parent feel that same need for physical presence over words today. It’s beautiful that you’ve found peace in understanding his sacrifice but it’s also okay to still hold space for that younger version of you who just wanted him home for dinner. Your dad is truly amazing., however, that pain definitely shaped you to become stronger now-hence, a true man needs to be independent.
