I shaped this flat 3/8 steel bar for making a custom crossmember. Heat treatment necessary?
It was heated up using a blast furnace and hammered into shape for the right part and bent with a jig on the left. It was gotten glowing orange hot and cooled in water down to touching temperatures several times. How much has this affected the integrity of the steel? Should I heat treat it somehow before welding it into place? Is it very brittle now? I’m not sure how flexible a transmission crossmember needs to be and I’m concerned for the brittleness.
