Went to the World Long Drive Championships on a whim- some random observations/thoughts
My kid is a huge Kyle Berkshire fan and $25 for a ticket so why the hell not, right? They shoehorned the grid onto a local course (Bobby Jones) and I kind of got the impression the players didn't love it as it wasn't exactly flat out in the landing area. A great drive might get almost no rollout or a shitload of rollout depending where it landed. Otherwise, the venue was great- good seating, good tacos from the food truck, everyone was super friendly. Atmosphere is more like Pro Wresting than golf, (frequently terrible) music pumping the entire time, announcer trying to hype the crowd up. That said, it was totally appropriate as the crowd and competitors seemed to feed on it as the day went on. It was also kind of neat to see many of the players had friends and family in the crowd. They were definitely supporting their guy, but any time someone really mashed a drive the crowd cheered for them. Holy crap some of these guys are absolute units. Like, just absolutely huge and shredded. Holy crap some of these guys look like normal humans and still hit the ball a mile. Competitors were super friendly and accessible. They'd come sit in the stands in between their rounds to watch the other guys and were more than happy to BS. My kiddo got to talk to a bunch of them and get pics/autographs. Holy crap the ball is just never going to come down. Half the time I couldn't even see a drive land. A 400 yard drive is brain-breaking. The variety of swings was super interesting. Some guys had a swing that looked like a PGA player just trying to step on one and other guys had absolutely bonkers swings. That said, they all did it exactly the same way every time. They might swap clubs but the routine was always identical. They spray their drives all over the place. Not surprising given the clubhead speeds, but it was kinda weird to see after watching PGA guys hit everything on the button almost every time. We found one of the Bridgestone balls they use on the way out. Those things are ROCKS. Overall, a fun day out. Four stars, would go again. #sport source
