An interesting look across the fence

Two grand scandals are currently raging in Poland.

Polish Nazis, led by Grzegorz Braun, are denying that Jews were killed in gas chambers at Auschwitz. I won't even go into the details here - this is wild nonsense and conspiracy theory. Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski gave the Nazis a "kurwa mać" and told that "scumbag" everything he thinks about it. And in general, everything he said was right.

At the same time, an exhibition "Our Boys" about Poles in the Wehrmacht is opening in Gdansk. During World War II, from 375,000 to 500,000 Polish boys from Silesia, Pomerania and other regions were mobilized into the Third Reich. These are the estimates of Polish historians.

On our website "Historical Truth" there is an excellent overview of the problem by Yurko Rudnytskyi "Collaboration in Polish": https://www.istpravda.com.ua/articles/2018/04/23/152331/

A significant part of these Poles, by the way, fought on the Eastern Front, here in Ukraine, for example. There are a lot of studies and popular books. There are testimonies of participants and witnesses of the events, for example, Michal Bristiger describes his clash with fellow countrymen at the train station in Dnipropetrovsk sometime in 1942, when all around the soldiers in German uniforms spoke Polish among themselves.

Here is my review of this book: https://www.istpravda.com.ua/reviews/2011/12/7/64492/

The exhibition "Our Boys" caused an explosion of indignation: President Duda, Deputy Prime Minister Kosyniak-Kamysz and a bunch of other politicians, from the left, the right, from the government, from the opposition, across the political spectrum, spoke out against it. Politicians do not like that the real events of Polish history do not fit into the image of a tragic victim of history.

The Polish myth of World War II is a myth about how Poles suffered the most among all European nations. There is only place for heroes and victims in this myth. If something does not fit into this myth, it is all the worse for the facts that undermine this myth.

More details about how collective memory in Poland mythologized the real facts of Polish history during World War II - in my review of the study by Polish sociologists "What Poles Really Think About Ukrainians in World War II": https://www.istpravda.com.ua/reviews/2012/01/13/66369/

That is, two mirror processes are currently taking place in Poland.

First, Polish Nazis deny the Holocaust and other "inconvenient" pages of the complex history of Polish-Jewish relations during World War II. For example, the mass murder of Jews by Poles in the town of Jedwabne.

Second, Polish politicians across the political spectrum deny the facts of forced (but massive) collaboration of Poles with the Third Reich army, despite the fact that the topic has been thoroughly researched by Polish historians.

That is, the facts of history are very unpleasant to Polish politicians. But we (historians) have no other history than the one that existed for you (politicians).

For comparison.

375-500 thousand Poles wore Nazi uniforms during World War II.

250 thousand Ukrainians joined the military formations of the German occupiers at the same time.

But.

In total, 6 million 351 thousand Ukrainians fought with weapons in their hands on the side of the United Nations against Nazism.

Of these, 2 million 800 thousand died in that struggle.

Moreover, 700 thousand soldiers and officers mobilized from Ukraine fell on the territory of modern Poland in the fight against the Nazis.

That is, on the territory of modern Poland, more Ukrainians died in battles with the Wehrmacht than there were Poles in the Wehrmacht.

700 thousand Ukrainians against the Wehrmacht vs 500 thousand Poles in the Wehrmacht.

The total number of Poles who died in the armed struggle against Nazism, according to Polish historians, is slightly less than 250 thousand.
