Road to Avengers Doomsday: Iron Fist Season 1
This for me, is one of the worst things to come out of the MCU. One of the worst things, there are others which I will get to later. Where Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Moon Knight, Agatha All Along, and Werewolf by Night all got me interested in these other areas of the Marvel universe that I wasn’t completely well versed in, Iron Fist does the exact opposite. I am also not well versed in Iron Fists corners of the Marvel Universe, but this doesn’t do his character and related things like settings, concepts, storylines, etc. any favors.
The show never really recovers from the terrible execution of a pretty surface level premise and story. There really are no compelling characters and performances, and the writing is atrocious. Again, as I mentioned, it seems to do more of a disservice to the source material and the martial arts vibe/genre the series was aiming for. Instead those things are packed in the trunk and we get a boring office family drama. And a lot of it boils down to just simply asking questions: Why does no one believe Danny is who he says he is? Even in 2016-2017 (when this season is set) we had ways of determining identity. And to top it all off, this is set in a world full of superheroes and you’re telling me a company and rich executives can’t extend resources to investigate Danny? The show does this all the time. It suspends logic just to make something happen. It’s like this particular show and characters are stuck in the 1800s. Let’s also not forget the scene where someone kept flammable liquids in an area where physical copies of medical records are kept....again...suspended logic. And the whole psychiatric hospital bit is so dumb. You have a shady hospital that allows patients to roam freely, gaslights patients into believing they’re ill and you expect me to believe the protagonist is just going to go along with all of that? And then there’s the whole martial arts challenge in Episode 6 which was so cheap (literally looked like a haunted house set at one point) and dumb. Out of all of the performances in this series the one that I cannot stand is Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum. I am not trying to demean his talents and skills as an actor. I think that it was a mixture of bad writing and bad direction and the character is just so flat and bad.
The one thing that I did like in the series was Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing. She is one of the few characters who is interesting and actually seems like a multi-dimensional character in a show filled with bad writing, bad acting, and bad direction. I guess it was cool to see Madame Gao again as well, but the Hand elements in this series were also kind of muddled. This was clearly the last pass before the Defenders so they had to stress the Hand. I guess David Wenham had fun as Harold Meachum. He seemed to be enjoying himself. At least someone was while making this.
I’m going to take a swipe at the DC CW soap operas here and say this is Marvel’s version of those shows. There may indeed be an audience for this kind of stuff. But it seemed like no one making this show gave it any real effort and seemed to care.
