What's your system for finding dispersed camping spots? Feels like everyone gatekeeps their locations
I've been trying to get away from the rec.gov http://rec.gov reservation game and do more dispersed camping on BLM and Forest Service land. The problem is actually finding spots. Every time I search online I get the same generic advice "just drive down a forest road and look for a flat spot." Cool, thanks.
I've been using a combo of Google Earth satellite view to find clearings near forest roads, cross-referencing with the MVUM maps on the Forest Service website, and then just hoping for the best when I show up. It works maybe 60% of the time. The other 40% I'm either on private land I shouldn't be on, or the "road" is basically a creek bed.
I get why people don't share their spots publicly. But there has to be a better middle ground between "figure it out yourself" and having every spot on Instagram. What tools or methods do you all actually use? #activity #camping
