Help me understanding what makes Ragnarok such a loved movie
Let's get this straight. Both first movies were pretty lackluster (TDW even more since it was produced during the writers strike) but I feel like Thor's representation in both Avengers and Age of Ultron was pretty good. It was obviously the most dramatic in the group, but he also had its goofy moments here and there.
So, after not watching Thor in Civil War, the next time we see him is in Ragnarok. And boy did I know what I was going into just from the first scene with Surtr.
I get that the shorts/mockumentaries done by Taika revolving around Thor during the Civil War events were popular as they were a pretty small bit of comedy, but once you evolve from a sketch to an entire movie, for me it's not fun at all.
All the seriousness in Thor's character is removed for the first two thirds of the movie. From being a serious character with goofy moments, he becomes kinda like Star-Lord, a goofy character with some serious moments.
And I'll give Taika this. His photography choices are excelent. The scenes regarding the flashbacks with the valkyries and Hela, or the fight in the bridge are excelent. Wallpaper material. Not really a fan of the whole Sakaar look, but that's merely a personal taste.
But then, the rest of the movie doesn't do it for me.
Let me explain some of my caveats with the movie
\-Odin dies out of nowhere. He just needed to for plot reasons. He didn't even go to Vallhala since he doesn't die in battle.
\-Thor gets KOd by Valkyrie by an ELECTRIC SCHOCK (just leaving it there, he can absorb and redirect thunder with no issues)
\-He gets scared by a Smallworld-like ride after being caught. Someone who has fought horrors, dark elves, huge monsters... Feels just off.
\-Gets knocked down by a ball thrown by himself after an emotional speech. Taika just runing the mood.
\-Hulk becomes a baby out of nowhere. They went from mindless beast to 2 year old child brain.
\-Banner comes back after being years trapped in Hulk form and there's no sign of trauma. He just jokes around when we've seen multiple times how vulnerable Banner is after the transformation.
\-Banner face slamming against the rainbow bridge. Another hype moment ruined (although I gotta say this one made me chuckle a bit)
\-The phrase "Are you Thor, the god of hammers?" is one of the worst lines I've heard. I get it, he's the god of thunder, he doesn't need the hammer to channel the thunder. It's just too goofy, and even more considering how powerful Mjolnir is.
Amongst many other things.
I feel like they went the easy route, changing a character entirely just because people didn't like him, turning him into a completely different person, instead of finding a way to make him interesting just by being who he's meant to me.
That's why Taika went "oh, you like this goofy movie? then get ready for Love&Thunder because you're going to love it" and we all know how that went.
For example, the Thor we see in the Doomsday teasers feels like the real Thor we should have had all this time. The Thor everyone loves from Infinity War landing in Wakanda in a godly manner with a purpose. Not Star-Lord with a beard. I love Star-Lord, because he's Star-Lord. I want to love Thor being Thor.
I know this is a hot take these days, since Ragnarok is widely loved and praised, but I've always felt like it was such a huge let down... #video #movies source
