The Learning Tax: Why Getting Better Means Looking Worse First
I call it the **learning tax**: if you actually want to get better at pickleball, you have to be willing to suck for a while. New mechanics, drops, resets, footwork, whatever. You're going to miss balls you used to make and probably lose games you could have won with your old game. That's the tax. Nobody wakes up and says, “I want to play exactly the same as yesterday,” unless yesterday was amazing. But few people are willing to work on things, lose games, and look worse than they are in front of their friends to be better tomorrow. The players willing to pay that tax keep improving, and eventually stronger players notice and stronger groups open up. The ones who protect where they are tend to stay there. I've lived both sides of this in pickleball, so I thought it was worth sharing.
**TL;DR: Don't protect your ego. Protect your learning process.** #sport
