YSK Wi-Fi is NOT "The Internet"

**Why YSK:** When calling your ISP (Internet Service Provider), or your work's tech support/Help Desk, it helps the person you are talking to identify the problem easier and sooner if you can say "I can't get to the Internet," like a public website (e.g. Google.com) versus reaching a local printer or internal company webpage (intranet site).

It is a common mixup, but thinking of Wi-Fi as "the Internet" is a bit like thinking of a faucet as "the water company." One is how you get the service; the other is the massive infrastructure that actually provides it. The Internet is the road to where the data lives this is outside of your home or work (public websites, streaming services, emails).

Wi-Fi's only job is to connect your devices (phone, laptop, tablet) to a central hub, usually your router or Wi-Fi pods, that connect you to anything else local on the network.

You can have a perfectly functional Wi-Fi network with no Internet at all. For example; you could print a file from your laptop to your printer via Wi-Fi, even if your ISP is having an outage.

When you're seeing a message that says something like: "Connected without Internet" on your device, that means the W-i-Fi is working, but you aren't getting to the Internet.
