YSK the true cost of cars

Why YSK: Cars boast nearly the highest cause of death for adolescents in America.

Cars are dangerous machines. According to an article published to the National Library of Medicine, in 2016 Car collisions accounted for 20% of all mortality in children and adolescents compared to gun violence which accounted for 15.4%. Yet unlike gun violence, you are unlikely to hear any calls to action based on that fact. We simply calculate deaths caused by car collisions and traffic violence as a fact of life here in the states. We've got to get around somehow, after all.

Aside from collision related deaths, cars have also been linked to adverse health outcomes. According to the peer-reviewed research paper "Car harm: A global review of automobility's harm to people and the environment," traffic-related air pollution, microparticles and other materials shed from cars and car infrastructure, noise pollution, and the sedentary lifestyles that cars enforce have been reliably linked to a plethora of health issues. The effects are too numerous to list out, but include heart disease and lung cancer mortality, high blood pressure, and cognitive impairment.

Perhaps it is time to question the system of transportation we have simply come to accept as second nature.
