Road to Secret Wars #2 - Captain America: The First Avenger
I'm sure like many others, I've decided to do a chronological re-watch of the entire MCU and the main bits of any connecting universes. This includes but is not limited to: the movies and D+ shows, the Netflix and ABC shows, the Sony and Fox movies, and choice pieces of most every Spider-Man cartoon. I do not expect to be finished by the release of Doomsday, and so I am considering the release of Secret Wars as my deadline.
After I watch something, I wanted to come on here and discuss a little bit about what I thought of each project. This time around I watched 'Captain America: The First Avenger'.
In my opinion this film is one of the all-time greats of the MCU. It is a perfect introduction to the character and the world of Captain America, but what I really want to praise is the 'vibe' of the movie. It feels 'old school' and I don't just mean because it's a period piece. It hearkens back to classic adventure movies like Indiana Jones and The Rocketeer. Of course, the director of the Rocketeer also directed this movie so it is easy to see why. It reminds me of pulpy adventure stories of my childhood. Yes, I am pretty old.
I think this and the first Iron Man is probably the peak of the MCU and definitely the highest point of Phase One at least. But I will say that the movie can become a bit montage heavy in the latter half and that can get a little repetitive. Also, this movie came out in the peak of the 3D movie craze and there is some gimmicky camera shots that are annoying and hard to ignore. That's probably the sole reason I still put Iron Man above this one in my ranking.
Red Skull and Hydra are a really good villain to start with, it's just a no-brainer. It does make me a little disappointed knowing that Hugo Weaving will never return to the role, but it is what it is I suppose. Oh, and I love the banter of the Howling Commandos. A highlight of the film, to be sure.
It also works as a really nice tie-in to Thor, a lead-up to Avengers and even begins planting seeds for Winter Soldier and beyond. But this brings me to my first big unanswered question of the MCU in my rewatch so far...what is going on with Red Skull? Now that the stones are destroyed, what is he up to? Will we ever see him again? Only time will tell. Will he show up in Doomsday/Secret Wars? I'm guessing not, but you never know.
How will this movie tie-in to Secret Wars anyway, if at all? We know Steve Rogers is back via time travel or something and I'm assuming we will see a Peggy cameo as well. Bucky is a member of the New Avengers and they are one of the main teams of the movie. That's all pretty obvious. What about Nick Fury? Will S.W.O.R.D. factor into the plot at all? I'm interested to hear others' predictions on this.
All in all, I had a great time reminding myself why this film is so great. It's one of the original movies that got me hooked on the MCU to begin with. If you haven't seen it in a while, I highly suggest you do so, it's just a fun ride. Where would I put it in a suggested viewing order? Probably at the beginning, it's a great tone-setter for the MCU as a whole. However, something can be said for watching in the intended release order. Slotting this in between Thor and Avengers actually works really well. The reveal of the Tesseract in the Thor post-credit scene is the perfect time to 'flashback' to this story which opens with Red Skull attaining it from Odin's treasure room. Either way works, pick your poison.
And that's all I have to say about 'Captain America: The First Avenger'. Let me know what you liked or didn't like about this one, and if you have any questions or comments about my project in general I would love to hear them. I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts, and I will be back as soon as I can with another piece on the road to Secret Wars! #movies #video source
