Traditional Hungarian wedding customs are based on cheerfulness and generous hospitality.
Now modern elements are mixed with old traditions, but the most important things have remained.
Proposal and engagement before the wedding: In the past, the groom went with the wedding master of ceremonies to the bride's house to ask for the bride's hand in marriage. Today, this is more of a private, romantic two-person affair.
Bachelor and hen parties: The last "free" evening before the wedding.
The event of the big day: proposal of the bride.
The wedding party goes with the groom to the bride's house. The best man (or master of ceremonies) proposes to the bride's parents in a poetic, humorous way. (This only exists in villages, not typical in cities.)
Wedding procession: After the proposal of the bride, the guests march (or drive in a convoy) to the ceremony site, singing, playing music, and blowing horns.
Two ceremonies: In Hungary, a civil ceremony (in front of the registrar) is mandatory for an official marriage. This is often followed by a church wedding.
It is customary to throw rice at newlyweds as they leave the church or civil marriage hall.
The throwing of rice symbolizes wealth, abundance, and fertility at the end of ceremonies.
After the civil or church ceremony, upon arriving at the wedding site, the couple must break a porcelain plate.
They must sweep up the shards together: this symbolizes team spirit and overcoming obstacles together.
