Should more MCU movies be eligible to win Oscars, let alone be nominated for other categories outside of Visual Effects?
This has been on the top of my mind for the past few years, and it would only be brought up during Oscars weekend back in March. I wanted to get this out MONTHS ago, but life happened. Back then, I searched up the number of times MCU movies have gotten Oscars, and what’s the result?
**27**
Of the 27 nominations across over 30 films, how many Oscars did the MCU actually win?
**4**
This is not a joke. Since 2008, the MCU has won ONLY FOUR Academy Awards. A lot of people don’t even tend to realize how FRUSTRATING this makes me feel as a long time Marvel fan, and I’m sure others would feel the same.
Now for what films did these four Oscars go to?
**Black Panther** and it’s sequel **Wakanda Forever**
The first movie won these awards:
**Best Costume Design**
**Best Original Score**
**Best Production Design**
The second won this award:
**Best Costume Design**
That’s pretty much all the awards the MCU, and it’s for a movie and it’s sequel.
Now I know what people are gonna say:
*“Oh, bLAcK PanThEr wAs The FirSt LivE aCTioN AfrIcAn AmerICaN SupERhErO mOviE aNd it dEseRVes tHe LovE!”*
There are literally other films that deserve those awards more than BP, especially in more categories.
For Best Costume Design, I feel like Eternals should have been one of the contenders. Regardless of how problematic the movie is, you can’t deny the costume designs in that film.
There are lots of MCU films outside of Black Panther with Oscar winning music like the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four.
What annoys me the most is that when a Marvel movie is a nomination at the Oscars, it would be for ONE category:
**Best Visual Effects**
These movies are MORE than just visual effects. There is also the Direction, Screenplay, Costumes, Acting, Music, Production Design, and Cinematography. It’s like the Academy did it as an effort to “include” the MCU in the ceremonies, knowing they don’t want it to win.
This reminds me of this comment I have recieved when I asked about Wakanda Forever being denied Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars. It went something like this:
\>The Academy doesn’t like to put Marvel movies in best picture. They did for Black Panther 1 which was cool but that is the only time they’ve ever done it. They’re like Scorsese. They don’t think they’re cinema and are more of a medium to generate hype compared to the other films listed, Wakanda Forever definitely feels more like a “hype generator”, not saying it isn’t cinema, but it’s more of a hype generator. But I feel like instead of focusing on what’s not there, focus on what is.
If what that comment says is true, then the Academy should be ashamed. Marvel Movies, and superhero movies as a whole, aren’t just hype generators, but rather stories that fans would pay money to see.
Anyways, those are just my thoughts. What do you all think about the situation? #video #movies source
