Best way to drill a level 1” hole through both sides of a 2⅜” square steel tube?
Hey everyone,
Looking for a bit of advice from people who have more experience with steel fabrication than I do.
I need to put a 1” hole through both sides of a square steel tube that’s already installed vertically, so I can’t really take it down or put it on a drill press.
The tube is approximately 2⅜” × 2⅜” with a 1/16” wall thickness. The main thing is that I’d need the holes on both sides to line up and be as level as possible. It doesn’t need to be machine-shop perfect, but I’d like it to come out clean so my attachment can fit properly and bear weight.
I’ve been looking at things like mag drills, hole saws, step bits, and knockout punches. I’m not actually sure what material the tube is, but it’s part of a home gym, so I assume it’s some fairly tough steel or metal. I don’t really know what the best approach would be for a tube this thin. I’m willing to rent equipment if that’s the right answer.
One thing I’m also wondering about is that the hole needs to go through the face of the tube that has the stamped/printed numbers and markings on it. Could that create any issues from a structural, fabrication, or am I overthinking it?
For those of you who do this kind of work regularly, what would you use? Any tips for keeping everything lined up and getting a clean result would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve attached a photo of the post and the location where the hole needs to go.
