ELI5: Why does the Pauli-Exclusion principle not apply for black holes?

I thought it wasn't really a force, but more a law that fermions can't exactly overlap in quantum state and place. So it's not really pushing back against gravity, as it's not a force. But black holes were fed by those fermions, so why do *they* collapse where neutron stars do not? Does matter stop being fermions when going into a black hole?
